SAUGUS – Town officials are making it even easier for residents to recycle by opening a Recycling Drop-Off Site beginning Saturday, Sept. 20.Recycling Coordinator Lorna Cerbone has been toying with the idea of opening a drop off center for some time and now it is official. The center will accept the same items that are allowed with curbside recycling – paper, cardboard, bottles, cans and glass containers – but it will also accept TVs, computers and small electronic items from Saugus residents only. There is no pre-registration or fee required to participate at this point, but residents will need to present a current driver’s license with a local address. Residents who need to make other arrangements for proof of residency or have any questions can call Inspectional Services at 781-231-4115.Town officials have not committed to maintaining a completely free program. Cerbone said recently she would like it to remain a free service, but she is looking at the program as a pilot to see how it takes off.”I would like to do this to offer recycling especially to those that don’t have curbside recycling,” she said.Residents who live in condos or gated areas who provide their own trash pick up do not take part in the town’s curbside recycling. This would give those residents a chance to participate, as well as giving residents who missed the recycling pick up a chance to unload their materials.Cerbone said she hoped the center would be a good outlet for residents, but wouldn’t be abused. She said plans to track where big-ticket items such as TVs and computers are coming from, so if she sees a trend she can nip it in the bud.Cerbone said she is heartened by the positive feedback she has received since the town instituted weekly recycling, so she expects this effort will be well received as well. The center will be open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays at 515 Main St. behind the Department of Public Works.
