Girls Soccer: Falcons shockingly rout Saugus

Not even Danvers coach Jim Hinchion expected to see what his team did against Saugus on Monday at Anna Parker Playground in Saugus.The Falcons got into a 1-0 hole just 90 seconds into the game when Belinda Cresta-Devine (assisted by Gabby Cogliano) scored for Saugus (0-3). But Danvers rallied in a huge way, rattling off seven straight goals to take a 7-1 win.”We really jelled on offense,” Hinchion said. “It took us 10 minutes after they scored to get going, but once we did, we really turned it on.”Saugus coach Ted Moriello, suffice to say, was shocked at the outcome.”I never thought that it would end up that way,” Moriello said. “It’s been a long time since we’ve been blown out and we were blown out (Monday).”Corey Persson (2 goals, 1 assist) got the Falcons (4-0) going when she tied the game at 1-1 off a Gabby Vega assist. Brittany Russo scored the next two goals and assisted on Liz Burgess’ (goal, assist) tally in the final minute of the first half to make it 4-1, Falcons.Persson’s second of the game early in the second half made it 6-1 before Kathleen Landers (goal, assist) and Shyla Bates closed out the scoring.”I didn’t know what to expect with this team,” Hinchion said. “We looked good in the preseason, but that’s the preseason. But we’ve been able to pass some pretty good tests.”St. Mary’s 8, Marian 0At Manning Field, Amanda Webster had a hat trick for the Spartans (4-1, 1-1 CCL). Webster has scored eight goals this season. Also recording points for St. Mary’s were Kirsten Ferrari (goal, assist), Brittney Naumann (goal), Molly Carey (goal), Courtney Winters (goal), Mikaela Donovan (goal), and Amy Bozarjian (assist). Megan Brickley and Angela Dandreo split time in net.”It was a good win after a tough week,” said Spartans coach Jim Foley, whose team was coming off a loss to Bishop Fenwick.Beverly 0, English 0At Manning Field in Lynn, the defenses ruled the day as neither team could find the mark. English’s Brittany Goulet recorded her second shutout of the season.The Bulldogs (1-3-1) also got solid play from Ashley Keighley, Jenna Henry and Devon Robinson.Peabody 5, Classical 0At Peabody, the Tanners (4-0) jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead before scoring two goals late in the second half to put the game away.Erica DiGiacomo paced the Peabody offense with two goals and an assist. Angela Ellison scored her first varsity goal and added an assist while Taylor Provost and Emily Scolaro each had goals. Emily Manoogian had a single helper.Katie Psapatsaris stopped all five shots she faced to post the shutout. Classical (1-3-1) got good performances from Danielle Jesoraldo and Yasmin Bedir on defense and Brianna Capone up front.Swampscott 6, Gloucester 0At Newell Stadium in Gloucester, the Big Blue (3-1) only led 1-0 at the half but exploded for five unanswered goals in the final 40 minutes.”The defense was outstanding and the offense really clicked in the second half,” Swampscott coach Fred Day said.Jen Cleary led the Swampscott offense with two goals while Rikki Langan and Carley Hayes had a goal and an assist each. Marissa Gambale and Skylar Sabbag also had goals.Mallory McDonough had a pair of assists with Casey Connolly and Kelly Birchmore having one helper each. Tara Nimkar posted her second shutout in a row.Marblehead 2, Winthrop 0At Marblehead, the Magicians (3-2) scored once in each half and got five saves from Silvi Cohen. Lindsey Cohen gave Marblehead a 1-0 lead at the half, assisted by Lizzy Whitehill. Mary Keroack’s unassisted goal early in the second half put the game away.Fenwick 2, Williams 2At Braintree, the Crusaders (2-0-1) had the lead in the late going but the hosts got the game-tying goal with a little less than 10 minutes to go.Kristin Verrette had both Fenwick goals, the first assisted by Lauren Toye-O’Donnell, while Jill Dean made seven saves for the Crusaders.Salem 5, Revere 1At Bertram Field in Salem, the Witches (3-2) got a pair of goals from Jasmine Bryant and a goal and an assist from Jessica Ngo.
