School Roundup: English boys soccer gets rare road win over Beverly

Beverly has always been a house of horrors for the Lynn English boys soccer team, but on Monday, the Bulldogs might have gotten rid of some of the bad karma.Coach Kerry King shifted his lineup around, moving Mubarak Nyang from midfield to forward to help spark a sluggish offense. The move paid off as Nyang recorded a hat trick and an assist to lead English to a 5-2 win.”This lineup really worked for us,” King said. “I think that we can be competitive in this league.”Nyang wasn’t alone in torching the Panthers as Kevin Garduno found the net twice while Gabe Smith and Eddie Roman added two assists apiece.”Beverly has always been a tough place to play in for us,” King said. “The offense really clicked for us.”St. Mary’s 4, Marian 1At Framingham, the Spartans (2-2) bounced back from their loss to Everett with a solid effort on the road.”We needed this one,” St. Mary’s coach Al Jackson said. “The kids had to get back on track after Everett.”Eric Donaghy netted a pair of goals for St. Mary’s while Alex Glover had a goal and two assists. Jeremy Tranfaglia had the other Spartan goal, with Mike Magsouli recording an assist. Nico DiSalvo had seven stops in goal.Marblehead 2, Winthrop 0At Miller Field in Winthrop, Kurt Grossman stopped all six Viking shots and Mike Brenan and Jesse Lipkind each had a goal as the Magicians improved to 3-1. Jacob Evanter and Sam Terrill also played well for coach Steve Ingemi’s team.Danvers 4, Saugus 0At Dr. Deering Stadium in Danvers, the Falcons (3-1) won their third in a row as Chris Ciampa led the offense with a pair of goals. Tom Marini had a goal and an assist with Wesley Moreira also having a goal and Ben Pasquariello an assist.Anthony Cacuzza played well at stopper and K.J. Mills was solid at midfield for the 0-3 Sachems, who host Winthrop on Wednesday.Revere 1, Salem 0At Revere, the Witches (0-3) once again had boatloads of chances but couldn’t find the mark as Revere scored off a Salem defender late in the second half for the only goal.Fenwick 5, Williams 0At Donaldson Field in Peabody, the Crusaders (2-0) got a pair of goals from Pablo Sosa and two assists each from Conor McCormack and Doug Garabedian against the Bishops. Fenwick, which led 2-0 at the half, also got goals from Brandon Ballard, Phil Eagan and Andrew DiNuccio. R.J. Vitolo had a single assist for Fenwick, which split the shutout between Brian McCormack and Eli Kaufman.St. John’s (S) 2, St. John’s (D) 1At Danvers, the Eagles (1-1) struggled for a half against the defending Division 1 state champion before finding their legs in the second half. But the Prep couldn’t score until Zach Hathaway scored on a penalty kick with 90 seconds remaining.”We didn’t play well in the first half. But we had possession the whole second half and had plenty of chances,” Eagles coach Dave Crowell said.Steve Pasinski made 10 saves for the Prep.GOLFPeabody 52 1/2, Classical 19 1/2At The Meadow at Peabody, the Rams (0-4) got a 6-3 win from Sean Winchell at No. 2 and a halved match by Jeff Gaudet at No. 1.Salem 53, Revere 19At Olde Salem Greens, the Witches (3-3) won seven of eight matches against the visitors. Wes Koen won 8-1 at No. 1; Peter Cavallaro was a 6 1/2-2 1/2 winner at No. 2; Scott Sadoway won 5 1/2-3 1/2 at No. 3; David Karam took a 5 1/2-3 1/2 win at No. 4; Mike Doherty was a 6 1/2-2 1/2 winner at No. 5; Cam Darmody won 8-1 at No. 7 and Shane Ballou won 9-0 at No. 1. Revere’s win came from Nick Adreani, a 5-4 result at No. 6.Lynnfield 169, Ham-Wen 142At Sagamore Spring GC in Lynnfield, Joe Anderson’s 35 points led Lynnfield (3-3). Matt Connolly racked up 30 points and Brian Corcoran added 28. Paul O’Brien recorded 27 points with Matt Dario and Paul Rogato racking up 26 and 23, respectively.GIRLS CROSS COUNTRYDanvers 15, Classical 50At Lynn Woods, freshman Kristen Kurpiel was the top runner for the Rams, finishing 14th.
