St. John’s Prep cross country coach Ray Carey and his wife, Dianne, might just have the best “what I did on my summer vacation” story yet.The Marblehead couple, who both teach at The Prep, headed west for vacation this summer, and after taking in the US Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon, they headed to California to visit their four children. One of their stops was in Alhambra to visit their daughter, Michelle, and her husband, Lenin, who were about to become parents for the second time. When Michelle went into labor, she, Lenin, and Dianne Carey hopped in the car for the trip to the hospital, but they didn’t quite get there when Esperanza Orozco-Carey decided it was time to make an appearance after only 20 minutes or so of labor. Diane Carey sprung into action and delivered her daughter’s baby in the back seat on the Los Angeles Freeway. What puts the story in the “what I did on my summer vacation” essay Hall of Fame is that two years earlier, her daughter gave birth in the car in front of the hospital, and she helped deliver Idalia Orozco-Carey as well.
