The Bishop Fenwick boys and girls soccer teams made it a clean sweep against rival St. Mary’s Monday with the boys winning 2-1 at Fenwick and the girls winning 3-1 at Manning Field. The scores were the same as the first time around.In the boys game, after a scoreless first half, the Crusaders (5-4) broke the stalemate on a Brandon Ballard goal with 10 minutes remaining. Doug Garabedian had the assist. St. Mary’s center midfielder Alex Glover only needed two minutes to come up with the equalizer on a penalty kick, but the Crusaders iced the win when Ballard scored his second of the day, unassisted, with three minutes to go.”They put the pressure on us for the last three minutes,” Fenwick coach Dave Mitchell said. “It was an up-and-down game ? Every time we play them, it’s always a tight game.”Although not happy about the loss, St. Mary’s coach Al Jackson was pleased with his team’s play.”This is our big rivalry,” Jackson said. “This is the game I’ll miss the most next year (Jackson is stepping down at the end of the season). These are two teams who have a ton of respect for each other.”Brian McConnell (11 saves) was in net for Fenwick and Rob Goggan, who made seven saves, including several at point-blank range, was between the pipes for St. Mary’s (5-5-1). Joe Gill and Mike Maghsoudi played well at sweeper and outside defender, respectively, for the Spartans.Lynnfield 4, Georgetown 3At Georgetown, the Pioneers jumped out to a 4-1 lead and then held off a late surge by the Royals. Andy Milanazzo had two goals for Lynnfield with Nick Forgione and Steve Knox supplying the other two. George Levantakos had a pair of assists and Dan Kearney and Matt DeRosa had one each. Jerry Reid picked up his first win for the Pioneers (4-4-2).Haverhill 3, Prep 0At Haverhill, the Eagles (2-4-2) came up short against a tough Haverhill (9-2) team despite strong play from midfielders Zach Hathaway and Garrett Folger.GIRLS SOCCERFenwick 3, St. Mary’s 1At Manning Field, the Crusaders (5-2-1) had the Spartans’ number once again. Kristin Verrette scored two goals and Lauren Toye-O’Donnell had one, with Bianca Gallo picking up an assist. Fenwick led 3-0 before Amanda Smith scored to avoid the shutout.”I think we played a great game,” Fenwick coach Karen Guillemette said. “They’re a tough team.”Sara Previte played well in the midfield for the Crusaders and Jill Dean (12 saves) was solid in net.Lynnfield 8, Georgetown 0At Lynnfield, Jamie Harris was pretty much unstoppable, scoring three goals and assisting on one for the Pioneers (7-1-1). Catherine Durant and Kathleen Rourke had a goal and an assist each, and Sam Harris, Lauren McCarthy and Scout Benson all had goals. Mackenzie Dolbeare picked up three assists and Nareh Sahakian and Katie Rowe combined for the shutout. Lynnfield led 3-0 by the half.
