School Roundup: Lynnfield girls soccer shuts out Marblehead

The Lynnfield girls soccer team took its lumps last season, but coach Mark Vermont knew that his team would be better come this season.Well, the Pioneers certainly have taken that step forward.Catherine Durant, Mackenzie Dolbeare and Jamie Harris each had a goal, with Harris adding two assists, as the Pioneers shut out Marblehead, 3-0, at Hopkins Field in Marblehead on Monday.”Last year was a little tough, but we had a young team,” Vermont said. “But we’ve really played well and this was a good win (Monday).”The Pioneers’ (9-1-1) defense also was outstanding, as Nareh Sahekian stopped all six Marblehead shots she faced.”Lynnfield came out and played well,” Marblehead coach Sam Yawson said. “We just couldn’t score.”Lynnfield’s road doesn’t get any easier on Thursday when it hosts defending Division 3 state champion Newburyport. The Magicians (7-5) host Saugus on Wednesday.Saugus 3, Salem 1At Bertram Field in Salem, the Sachems (7-3-2) ran their unbeaten streak to eight (7-0-1) thanks to a second straight win over the Witches (6-6-1).”I’m so proud of the girls,” Saugus coach Ted Moriello said. “They didn’t give up at 0-3-1. They kept battling.”Alyssa Wilkie and Abby Cogliano took care of the offense for Moriello’s team as Wilkie scored twice off Cogliano assists and then returned the favor with a helper on Cogliano’s goal. Holbrook Phelan had the Salem goal, assisted by Monique Gallant.Lauren Garchinsky got the win in goal.BOYS SOCCERSt. Mary’s 1, Everett 0At Manning Field, the Spartans (7-5-1) played what coach Al Jackson called “their best game all season” in avenging a 5-1 loss earlier this season to the Crimson Tide.Alex Glover provided the game’s only goal when he scored on a penalty kick at the 10-minute mark of the first half. The defense did the rest, led by goalkeeper Rob Goggan, who posted the shutout in net.Saugus 6, Matignon 1At Saugus, the Sachems’ (2-11) offense turned it on in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals to put away the Warriors.Carmen Bordonaro was the ringleader, recording a hat trick, with K.J. Mills, Dave Velasquez and Mahfound Tadjer also having goals. Albert Ung had two assists and Matt Guarente picked up a helper on Mills’ goal. Joey Meuse made eight saves in goal.Marblehead 1, Beverly 0At Beverly, Jess Lipkind’s goal, assisted by Sam Terrill, at the midpoint of the opening half was all the offense the Magicians (5-5-2) needed as Kurt Grossman pitched the shutout against the Panthers (1-9-3).St. John’s 1, Danvers 1At Dr. Deering Stadium in Danvers, the Eagles (5-4-3) got a goal from Tristan Hackett off a Dylan Stigliano corner kick with 15:00 left in the game to earn a tie with the host Falcons.Danvers broke a 0-0 halftime tie on Chris Ciampa’s goal at the four-minute mark.FIELD HOCKEYLynnfield 3, Georgetown 1At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (10-3-2) got two goals and an assist from Angela Arakelian and a goal and an assist from Meriam Gehret in the win over the Royals.Goaltender Melissa Williams was outstanding, stopping seven shots, many of them from close range.Duxbury 1, Fenwick 1At Donaldson Field in Peabody, the Crusaders (9-2-2) clinched a state tournament berth with the point. Fenwick trailed 1-0 in the second half before Liz Sears scored the equalizer, assisted by Lauren McHugh.Casey Landry made nine saves in goal.
