Golf Roundup: Classical wins the battle of Lynn

It’s been a tough year for both the Classical and English golf teams, but the Rams’ season ended on a high note with a 37-35 win over the Bulldogs Tuesday at Gannon Golf Course.”It was a close match,” Classical coach Jay Fiste said. “All the matches were pretty competitive. Both coaches (himself and English coach Tara Friedman) know all the players from both teams. They’re all good kids. It’s enjoyable.”Classical’s Jeff Gaudet defeated Dave Stevens at No. 1, 8 1/2-1/2; English’s Jim Elwell topped Sean Winchell at No. 2, 6-3; and Pat Strong (Classical) topped Steven Small, 6 1/2-2 1/2, in the three spot.English’s Dan Navaroli and Classical’s Alex Messina tied at four and English’s Scott Flaherty tied Classical’s Chris Merrill at five. Peter Rondea won 5-4 over English’s Justin Ford at six; English’s Nick Newhall topped Classical’s Connor McCall, 5 1/2-3 1/2, at seven and English’s Jonathan Surette defeated Classical’s Paul Strakus, 7 1/2-1 1/2, in the eight spot.Gaudet and Winchell will represent Classical at Thursday’s Northeastern Conference meet at Tedesco Country Club and Stevens and Elwell will do likewise for English.Classical finished its season 2-14 and English finished at 3-13. The Bulldogs won the first meeting between the two schools last week.St. John’s 243, St. Mary’s 248At Kernwood Country Club, the Spartans wrapped up a successful regular-season campaign with a 13-3 overall record, 10-0 Catholic Central League.The Eagles (15-0) had strong matches from medalist Nick Maccario, who fired a 1-over 36; Chris Orluk of Lynn (40); Nick McLaughlin (41); and Emilio Bardini, Corey Amirault and John Tassinari (42).The Spartans’ top scores came from Kevin McCarthy (38); Jesse Powers (40); Anthony Cardillo and Matt O’Hare (41); Jack McCarthy (43) and Brian Griffin (45).”It’s been an incredible season,” St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee said. “I’m very proud of this group of kids.”The Spartans have the Catholic Central League match Thursday at Gannon Golf Course (9:30) and the Division 3 North qualifier Monday at Hillview. The Prep still has two matches remaining, including one against BC High that has league ramifications.Swampscott 37 1/2, Marblehead 34 1/2At Tedesco, Swampscott’s Justin Massey was medalist with a 38. He also won his match at three, 6 1/2-2 1/2. The Big Blue, who took home the Tedesco Cup with the win, also had wins from Max Kane, 5 1/2-3 1/2, and Dan Owens, 6-3. Alex Patkin tied at No. 1 with Andrew Scholnick and Matt Nutter tied at No. 4 with Brendan Abel.Marblehead had wins from Ben Cohen, Chris Newman and Ben Kardos. The Magicians are 7-7 and need one more win to qualify for the state tournament. Swampscott (10-4) finished second behind Danvers in the NEC South.Salem 36, Beverly 36At Olde Salem Greens, the Witches wrapped up the regular season with an 11-6-1, 11-4-1 Northeastern Conference record. This one was as tight a match as they come. In one through eight, respectively, Salem’s Wes Koen defeated Ryan Lally, 6-3; Peter Cavallaro defeated Beverly’s Nick Pinciaro, 5 1/2-3 1/2; Beverly’s Adam Capodilupo defeated Scott Sadoway, 5-4; Beverly’s Tony Walsh topped Pat Little, 5 1/2-3 1/2; Derek Paglia defeated David Karam (Beverly), 5-4; Brett Larson (Beverly) defeated Cameron Darmody, 6-3; Shane Ballou (Salem) defeated Mike Von Zweck, 5 1/2-3 1/2; and Salem’s Kyle Sullivan halved his match with Dan Crowley.Lynnfield 178, N. Reading 124At Sagamore Golf Course, the Pioneers wrapped up the regular season with an 8-4 record. Brian Corcoran had 34 points; Matt Connolly, 32 points; Garrett McNeill, 30 points; Paul O’Brien, 29 points; Matt Dario, 28 points, and Joe Anderson, 25 points. Lynnfield will compete in the Cape Ann League Open Thursday at Far Corner.Peabody 56, Revere 16At The Meadows in Peabody, the Tanners (11-5) won or tied in every spot, beginning with Pat Dumas, 8-1, and continuing with Ryan English, 5-4; Sean Craven, 8-1, and Pat Trainor, 8 1/2-1/2; Eric Kane halved his match at No. 5.
