Swampscott handles Fenwick

PEABODY ? Six touchdowns. Two hundred and six yards passing. Three hundred and thirty-six yards of total offense. Not a bad first half, Swampscott. The Big Blue (5-1) scored on its first six possessions and rolled to a 42-12 win over overmatched and undermanned Bishop Fenwick Friday night at Donaldson Stadium.Chris Cameron threw touchdown passes of 11, 59 and 26 yards and ran 20 yards for another score before he and the rest of Swampscott’s first team watched the second half from the sidelines. Stephen Moran also took a reverse 56 yards for a score while Ilya Levin added a 2-yard touchdown run.”Chris Cameron is putting up all-state numbers,” Swampscott coach Steve Dembowski said. “We have very good skill players, our offensive line has done a good job, and we’re defending better. We’re right where we want to be.”Fenwick (2-4) isn’t exactly a tomato can, either. The Crusaders held a Newton South team that runs the same type of spread offense as Swampscott’s to 12 points back on Sept. 12, hung around with Methuen and nearly knocked off a decent Salem team. Fenwick has suffered some recent injuries, but coach Dave Woods didn’t make excuses.”They played well,” Woods said. “That’s the best team we’ve faced. This (field turf) is a great track for them and it’s a good (weather) night.”Fenwick scored on a 4-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to Joe Bona from Chris Renzulli, who played despite spraining an ankle, and a 21-yard run from Dan Kennedy (13 carries-108 yards).Swampscott recovered a fumble at the Crusaders’ 46-yard line on Fenwick’s opening drive and marched in for a touchdown in six plays, the last of which was an 11-yard screen pass from Cameron to Jon Poth for a touchdown. The Big Blue’s next drive went 58 yards in eight plays, the most significant of which was a 28-yard throw by Cameron on Patrick Freemont-Smith. Levin’s 2-yard plunge into the end zone capped the drive. The third touchdown was a quick strike from Cameron to Trevor Wheeler, who ran a fly pattern down the left sideline and outran everyone for a 59-yard score to increase Swampscott’s lead to 21-0 with 40 seconds left in the first quarter.Cameron ? who was 10-for-15, including seven completions in a row ? hit three more passes on the next drive before scoring on a serpentine scramble up the middle for another touchdown with 7:18 left in the first half. The Crusaders finally got on the scoreboard on their next possession ? a 72-yard drive that included a 17-yard throw from Renzulli to Dale Crispin and a 20-yard run by Kennedy before Renzulli hit Bona about five yards deep in the end zone.Any momentum Fenwick had was sapped immediately when Moran took a reverse on the next play from scrimmage and sprinted around left end to make the score 35-6.If the game wasn’t out of reach already, Swampscott made sure when it drove 48 yards in just 20 seconds in the last minute of the first half. Kyle Shonio picked up 22 yards on a screen pass and then Cameron hit Wheeler on a deep out in the left corner of the end zone.Fenwick’s scoring drive in the second half covered 95 yards and lasted 14 plays, the last of which was Kennedy’s 20-yard run up the middle, but it didn’t do much to ease a bad night for the Crusaders.”I don’t know if there’s anything positive we can take away from this game,” Woods said.Meanwhile, the Big Blue begins the divisional portion of its Northeastern Conference schedule next Saturday against Winthrop as a favorite to make another appearance in the postseason.”Except for the last 17 seconds (of a season-opening 1-point loss) against Winchester, there’s not much I’d change so far,” Dembowski said.
