SWAMPSCOTT-Swampscott, home of the Big Blue, is going green this Saturday.Kevin Donaher, who is one of the organizers of the Jackson Park Playground Committee, said the “Big Blue Goes Green Recycle/Reuse Day” is a collaborative effort between that group and the PTAs in town.?This is a wonderful community event,” he said. “It’s a great way to bring everyone in town together, a way to raise awareness about recycling and help several great organizations at the same time.”The event will be held at multiple locations throughout town on Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.Donaher said proceeds earned at the Middle School would be used for school recycling efforts and those raised at Machon Elementary School and High School are for the Jackson Park Playground fund.Donaher said at Machon Elementary School surplus furniture would be sold and children could select books from the library at no charge. There will also be a bake sale and neighborhood yard sale.Residents are encouraged to drop off non-perishable food items for the Massachusetts 4-H food drive at Machon School.Donaher said there will be a creative reuse art sale at the Middle School along with a bake table and surplus school furniture sale. He said residents should also check their closets, basements and attics for cleats, skates, ski equipment and winter coats.?We’ll have a swap area for those items at the Middle School,” he said. “Donations for the swap tables should be in good condition and can be made in front of the Middle School all this week or the day of the event.”Computer and electronics recycling areas will be set up at Swampscott Middle School and Swampscott High School. There is a $10 fee to drop off computer, a $15 fee for television, a $20 charge for air conditioners and a $25 fee for large appliances. All three sites will have collection bins for old eye glasses, cell phones, coat hangers, ink cartridges and soda can tabs for the Shriner’s Hospital for Children.Anyone who would like to volunteer should email Gail Steele at [email protected] or Donaher at [email protected].
