Speeding culprit in latest accident at Revere rotary

Thor Jourgensen

October 22, 2008 by Thor Jourgensen

REVERE – A truck hauling building material overturned in Brown Circle Tuesday morning, tying up traffic for four hours and drawing a guarded sigh of relief from Fire Chief Eugene Doherty.”We are very fortunate that the truck/trailer did not crush another vehicle. Clearly this was another case of driving too fast for the conditions dictated for this roadway,” Doherty said.Jose Climaco, 28, of Pawtucket, R.I., was driving east on American Legion Highway at 6 a.m. when he entered Brown Circle and overturned next to the Sunoco station.”He made it halfway around and rolled over, spewing sheet rock or a similar plywood substance,” Revere Police Capt. Michael Murphy said. The accident spilled stacked building material in the rotary, forcing police to shut down Route 107 while a tow truck crew and other workers righted the truck and picked up the load.”This was a massive inconvenience for the commuting public,” Murphy said.Murphy said Climaco drives for JR Reyes Transportation, Inc. of Seabrook, N.H. Police cited Climaco for speeding and hauling an unsecured load. Murphy said State Police also plan to cite Climaco for vehicle violations.Reyes representatives did not return a call to the company.Doherty in March said truckers driving “like cowboys” were responsible for over a half -dozen Brown Circle crashes in the last 10 years.None of the rollovers ignited the trucks’ fuel loads or gasoline in the service station located on the rotary’s Route 107 side.Doherty said the rollovers merit a state investigation into pay practices used by trucking companies. He said some firms pay drivers “as per load” promising them an hourly rate provided they deliver the load in a specified time period. The travel time allotted to the driver is often too short, Doherty said, prompting truckers to use excessive speed. The chief has also pushed to have the city acquire a truck equipped to spray flame-retarding foam over fuel spills. One of the rollovers involved a tank truck carrying over 5,000 gallons of gasoline. Doherty said the driver said the accident occurred when he swerved to avoid a disabled vehicle.
