MARBLEHEAD – Concerned about speeding on Leggs Hill Road, residents on that street have signed a petition seeking a 20-mile-an-hour speed limit on the street."There have almost been several major accidents at the intersection of Leggs Hill Road and Angenica Terrace," said Jack Haley, who wrote a letter accompanying the petition.Haley pointed out that Leggs Hill Road is a shortcut to Salem and "Many people travel this road at speeds in excess of 35 miles an hour."He also pointed out that in the near future the new YMCA will open on Leggs Hill Road, with a ballet class and preschool program, and neighborhood children will be crossing the road to get to the YMCA."For this reason, we feel that the posted speed limit on Leggs Hill Road should be the same as a school zone, 20 miles an hour," Haley wrote.Selectmen were eager to have a study done. At the urging of Town Administrator Tony Sasso, they referred the request to Police Chief Robert Picariello, who is expected to report to the board at their next meeting in November.
