PEABODY ? For the past two weeks Fenwick’s football team has watched the opposing team run the spread offense with some success. Apparently the Crusaders are a quick study, as they dominated Spellman 35-6 while implementing the offense for the first time.”When we were watching some film on Spellman we thought that we would be able to take advantage of some matchups,” Fenwick coach David Woods said, “if we spread them out.”Chris Renzulli took the helm running an offense that he had only played against during his time in varsity. Apparently the transition wasn”t as difficult as one might imagine. He finished with 219 all-purpose yards: 139 coming through the air.”The only way you can successfully run (the spread offense) is if you have a quarterback that can run and can pass,” said Woods. “(Renzulli) really did a great job today for us.”How dominant were the Crusaders? They outgained Spellman 414-119. In fact the only category that the Cardinals managed to pick up more yards than Fenwick was penalty yards: 40-15.Fenwick took control of the game early. Renzulli marched the Crusaders (3-4) down the field in 2:59 on eight plays. He actually scored the touchdown on a 30-yard run to his left. The Crusaders defense held the Cardinals on the first Spellman drive.A chop block reneged a nice gain by Blaise Branch. While the drive netted negative yardage (thanks to the penalty), it would be as good as Spellman’s offense would look until the fourth quarter. On the ensuing drive Renzulli once again put the Crusaders in the end zone: this time, thanks to his arm.He hit Kyle White in stride on a beautiful 51-yard touchdown pass. This was White’s first game back in two weeks. He finished the game with 93 yards receiving and 12 yards rushing to go with the touchdown.”It was great to get Kyle (White) back,” said Woods. “He was instrumental to us today. He really allowed us to do a lot of different things.”The Crusaders found their way into the end zone again on the final play of the first half. Renzulli hooked up with Dale Crispin on two plays that netted 46 yards quickly. On the next play Crispin powered the ball in for the touchdown from two-yards out.The defense also put together an impressive performance. The team managed four sacks: a pair coming from Joe Terry. John Welz made a sensational interception in the third quarter, on a beautiful pass made by Zac Cooney. Welz just out maneuvered the receiver to make the play.As much as the first half was Renzulli’s time to flourish, the second half was Dan Kennedy’s.The senior captain rushed for a pair of touchdowns. On the very first play of the third quarter, Kennedy took a sweep 93 yards to the house. He finished the day with a game-high 162 yards. The only blemish to the day came in the fourth quarter. Branch scored the Cardinals lone touchdown on a five-yard run.He finished the day with a team-high 54 yards rushing. An interesting side note to the game: White went 4-5 kicking extra points with his other foot.
