Soccer Roundup: Fenwick pulls out a win in final minute

The Bishop Fenwick boys soccer team was on the defensive the entire game, but the Crusaders made the most of their opportunities in a 2-1 win over the Witches Wednesday at Bertram Field.Salem peppered Fenwick goalie Brian McConnell with 28 shots. The Crusaders only tested the Salem (10-5-3) net a handful of times, but quality won out over quantity.”Their goalie played a great game,” Salem coach Mike D’Agostino said.Pablo Sosa scored for Fenwick in the first half (Doug Garabedian assist), but Salem’s Edwin DeMoya tied the game on a direct kick over “the wall” in the second half. Brandon Ballard put the game in the win column when he knocked home a Sosa ball.Jeff Iwanicki and captain Brad Duhaime played well defensively for Salem. Fenwick has one more regular-season game remaining, against Peabody Monday night.Williams 2, St. Mary’s 0At Braintree, the Spartans had four starters sitting out due to injuries, and the shakeup in the lineup made for a rough start. Archbishop Williams scored both its goals in the first five minutes. The Spartans played tough the rest of the way, dominating time of possession and holding the edge in shots on goal, but nothing found its way into the net.Sean Boarders and Mike Maghsoudi played well for the Spartans (9-8-2).St. John’s 1, Acton-Box. 1At Danvers, Acton-Boxborough scored with 10 minutes left on a corner kick to salvage the tie. Kelley Johnson had scored early on to give The Prep a 1-0 lead. The assist went to senior Patrick O’Keefe. Nich Moreland made nine saves in his first varsity start for the Eagles, who are 7-5-5 with a game remaining against Andover Saturday (3:30) at Andover.GIRLS SOCCERCent. Cath. 5, Saugus 0In Lawrence, Central Catholic came out like it was shot out of a cannon and by the half, the hosts led 2-0.”They were very aggressive,” Saugus coach Ted Moriello said.Lauren Garchinsky played well in net, stopping a penalty kick, and CeCe Cresta-Devine was solid at outside wing in the midfield. The Sachems wrap up the regular season with a 9-7-2 record.
