Boys Soccer: St. Mary’s survives in double overtime against Matignon

St. Mary’s coach Al Jackson is set to retire whenever the Spartans’ run in the Division 3 playoffs comes to an end. On Saturday, his heart had about all it could stand.St. Mary’s dominated play for most of the game but hit seven goalposts and found itself on the brink of elimination in double overtime against Matignon. But Julian Yourawski saved the day for the 10th-seeded Spartans as he banked a shot off the right post two minutes into the second sudden-death period for a 3-2 win and a date with No. 2 Shawsheen Tuesday (1) in the North quarterfinals.”We controlled the game from start to finish,” Jackson said. “I couldn’t criticize the kids for anything. We just couldn’t put the ball in the net.”St. Mary’s (9-7-2) found itself in a scoreless tie at halftime. Alex Glover put the Spartans up 1-0 early in the second half off an Eric Donaghy assist but the Warriors tied the game at the midpoint of the half and took a 2-1 lead with 17:00 left on an own goal.But with just under four minutes to play, a handball in the penalty area on a Donaghy pass gave the Spartans a penalty kick that Glover buried to tie the game and force overtime.In the extra session, the Spartans had a 5-0 shots on goal advantage but nothing to show for it. But Yourawski ended the drama early in the second OT off a Joe Gill assist.Swampscott 4, No. Andover 3 (OT)At North Andover, in a Division 2 North first-round game Saturday, the eighth-seeded Big Blue (12-2-5) saw the hosts score with three seconds left in regulation to force overtime. But the NEC South champions rebounded for the upset when Ben Wollersheid scored off a Chris Nenshati pass 2:30 into the first extra period.Wollersheid and Nenshati combined to give Swampscott a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the game. North Andover tied things just before halftime and took a 2-1 lead with 16 minutes left in the game.Matt Gateman tied the game 90 seconds later and Ethan Scott’s corner kick with 7:30 to go put the Big Blue back in front. But the Scarlet Knights tied the game in the final seconds.Prep 4, Haverhill 1At Haverhill, the 19th-seeded Eagles upset the No. 3 Hillies in Division 1 North first-round action. The Prep avenged a 3-0 regular-season loss and improved its record to 9-5-6. Next up for the Eagles is a quarterfinal matchup against No. 6 Madison Park Tuesday.Jon Woelfel had a hat trick for St. John’s and Owen Fox assisted on all four Prep goals. Garrett Folger also scored for St. John’s, which saw all of its goals come on throw-ins. Eagles goalie Steve Pasinski made six saves.Fenwick 5, Gr. Lowell 1At Fenwick, in Division 3 North first-round action, Brandon Ballard had a hat trick for the No. 8 Crusaders (11-7-1). Doug Garabedian scored on a free kick and Pablo Sosa scored off a Garabedian corner kick. Garabedian had two assists in the game and Andrew DiNuccio had one.Fenwick plays Tyngsborough Tuesday in the quarterfinals.The Crusaders led 2-1 at halftime. Brian McConnell played 70 minutes in net and Eli Kaufman played 10 minutes in net. Coach David Mitchell praised the defensive work of Conor McCormack at center back. The team also got Phil Eagan back from a sprained ankle.Everett 3, Peabody 2 (OT)At Peabody in a Division 1 North first-round game Sunday, the fourth-seeded Tanners (14-2-3) suffered a third straight first-round exit as the Crimson Tide scored 30 seconds into overtime for the upset.Peabody took a 1-0 lead early in the first half on a Matt Quadros goal. The Crimson Tide scored twice early in the second half to take a 2-1 lead.But the Tanners tied the game in the final seconds when Sean Cronin blasted a shot home off a Jared Shields throw-in to force overtime.Lynnfield 4, Northeast 1At Lynnfield, the No. 12 Pioneers scored three quick goals in Division 3 North first-round action against No. 5 Northeast Saturday. Marco Addonizio, Sean Morrisson and Matt Dillon all scored in the first half for a 3-0 lead. Dan Kearney assisted twice.After a Northeast goal, Nick Forgione netted a goal off an A
