Marblehead High Seniors trying to choose quotation

November 9, 2008 by jbutterworth

MARBLEHEAD-The Class of 2009 at Marblehead High is taking time to find the right quotations to adorn the high school entrance. The class officers told the School Committee Oct. 16 that they wanted to give the school a class gift of lasting value: two plaques bearing inspiring quotations. At that time they had chosen nine quotations to place before their fellow students in last Tuesday?s mock election. The election will select two quotes. All the nominees so far define education and its primary goal.Class Treasurer Ross Peterson told the committee Thursday evening that the election has been pushed back to December and seniors in Patrice Clough?s and Bethann Jones? English classes have been asked to provide more quotes. Clough is the class advisor.Peterson said the new process will give all the seniors a chance to participate in the nomination process. The nine quotations came from John F. Kennedy, Erasmus, Confucius, Galileo, Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King Jr., Marian Wright Edelman, William Butler Yeats and Nelson Mandela.Once the officers have reviewed the new quotes and chosen some to add to the nine they have already, they will return to the School Committee to give committee members a chance to weigh in on them.To be ready for a December run-off they will have to present the new list to the committee on Nov. 20 or Dec. 4.The committee has already played a role in the process. The students brought 10 quotes before them last month and the committee approved all but one.The election will choose two quotations to fill spaces briefly occupied by two controversial relief sculptures when the new high school opened six years ago.
