LYNN – Clearly, no one told the St. Mary’s girls soccer team it was the lower seed heading into its Division 3 North first-round matchup against Maimonides School. The 11th-seeded Spartans rolled past the sixth-seeded M-Cats, 8-0, Sunday afternoon at Manning Field. The Spartans improved to 12-6-3 with the win, while Maimonides finished its season 6-3-2.”It’s always good to set the tone,” St. Mary’s coach Jim Foley said. “We did what we had to do.”Amanda Webster led St. Mary’s with three goals – the second of which was the 100th of her career – and an assist. The senior is the all-time leading scorer in Spartans history with 155 points, and her 54 assists leave her two short of the all-time St. Mary’s record.”Any time a player goes over 100 goals, it’s a pretty amazing accomplishment,” Foley said.Molly Carey (goal, two assists) also led the offensive output. Maggie Carey, Lauren Edmunds, Stephanie Mowry and Brittney Naumann each scored once, while Tonianne Gerniglia had an assist. The Spartans thoroughly dominated the playing field in the opening frame. Mowry started the scoring just six minutes into the contest with a shot directly toward the M-Cat goal that the keeper was unable to handle, giving St. Mary’s a 1-0 lead.Webster followed with two straight goals. Her first, 10 minutes in, was a laser into the bottom right corner of the net, while her second was a mirror image to the lower left a minute later.Naumann made it 4-0 ten minutes later when she picked up a loose ball in front of the net and fired it in. Molly Carey concluded the first-half scoring with a lofted shot from 35 yards out a minute later. In the second half, Edmunds, Webster and Maggie Carey closed out the victory with goals. Webster recorded an assist on Carey’s score.St. Mary’s dominated statistically in the contest. The Spartans racked up a total of 24 shots, while Maimonides was able to put the ball on the Spartan net just a single time.St. Mary’s will travel to Lynnfield (14-2-3) on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. quarterfinal matchup with the third-seeded Pioneers. The Pioneers defeated Trinity Catholic 9-0 in their tournament opener. Two years ago, St Mary’s defeated Lynnfield in the North semifinals.”We have a little history against Lynnfield,” Foley said. “We just want to make sure we’re ready for the next game.”
