The soccer balls will be flying today with MIAA North girls and boys quarterfinal matchups being played all over the place. In an all-local matchup, the St. Mary’s girls will battle Lynnfield at Lynnfield at 2 p.m. Both teams head into the game with a high-powered offense. The Spartans are led by Santa Clara University-bound Amanda Webster, who notched her 100th career goal Sunday in an 8-0 win over Maimonides. Lynnfield has junior Jamie Harris, who has been on a tear for the Pioneers all season. She scored four goals in a 9-0 win over Trinity Catholic and now has 31 for the year. Harris is the Cape Ann League Small Player of the Year and Webster, who is her school’s all-time leading scorer with 155 points, is the Catholic Central League Large Player of the Year.”I think it’s going to be a great matchup,” Lynnfield coach Mark Vermont said. “They’re coming to us. It’s good to have some home-field advantage. We’ll just lace ’em up and see what happens.”The two teams played each other two years ago and St. Mary’s won, 5-1, avenging a previous loss to Lynnfield in the tournament.”It should be a fun matchup. If it’s not Newburyport we’ve been locking heads with (in the tournament in recent years), it’s been Lynnfield,” St. Mary’s coach Jim Foley said. “You have two of the best players going at each other with a lot of firepower. It should be interesting ? There are some good players on both sides.”In the other Division 3 game, Winthrop will travel to Greater Lowell. In Division 2, Marblehead is at Reading (4), and in Division 1, Peabody plays Winchester at Woburn (2).BOYS SOCCEROn the boys side, in Division 3, St. Mary’s will travel to Shawsheen Tech in Billerica for an 11 a.m. game; Lynnfield will be at Hamilton-Wenham at noon; and Bishop Fenwick will be home against Tyngsboro at 3 p.m.Swampscott will be at Masconomet (1) in Division 2 action and in Division 1, St. John’s Prep travels to Madison Park High School for a 2 p.m. game.St. Mary’s vs. ShawsheenAt Billerica, St. Mary’s boys coach Al Jackson is expecting Shawsheen to be fast up front with a strong midfield. He said the Rams, with six ties and quite a few shutouts, seem to rely on low-scoring games.Jackson said he doesn’t plan on making any adjustments heading into the game.”We’re not going to adjust for anything they do,” Jackson said. “We’ll just go in, play our style. We’re not going to do anything different ? If we play our game, we’re a tough team to beat.”St. Mary’s is 10-8-2.Lynnfield vs. Ham-WenAt Hamilton-Wenham, the Pioneers didn’t have much luck against the Generals during the regular season, losing both games, 2-1, but coach Brent Munroe is hoping the steady improvement he’s seen in his team over the course of the season will help turn the tables in round 3.”I think they (the Generals) are the best team in the North,” Munroe said, adding that Hamilton-Wenham won the Cape Ann League Small and has the Cape Ann League Small Player of the Year.”They’re tough,” he said. “But it’ll be fun. Our kids are excited.”Also in Division 3, Fenwick is home against Tyngsboro. The Crusaders reached the quarterfinal round with a 5-1 win over Greater Lowell.Swampscott at MasconometAt Masconomet (1), the Big Blue didn’t get any breaks, drawing the No. 1 seed (18-0-1) in the Division 2 North quarterfinals. Coach Mike Chase said he had a chance to scout Masco in its 1-0 win over Stoneham Sunday and was impressed.”They’re definitely a talented team,” he said. “They have a bunch of speed up top. They have a bunch of forwards who really look like they have the ability to finish.”Chase is also expecting a stingy defense with a solid sweeper and a goalie who doesn’t make mistakes. The Big Blue (12-2-5) may be without their leading scorer, Chris Nenshati, who pulled his hamstring in the last game and saw limited action. Nenshati, the Northeastern Conference South Player of the Year, injured himself in the first 10 minutes against North Andover. He saw limited playing time the rest of the way.
