LYNN – A Lynn man who was arrested Friday night for a series of warrants was reportedly responsible for a high-speed car chase in Peabody the Item first reported on Friday. But it’s what he said to the officers afterward that has people talking.Moments after Charles Ouimet, 25, of 38 Grove St., led officers on the pursuit beginning on Endicott Street in Peabody Thursday night before it was called off in Salem, he allegedly telephoned Peabody police and said, “You’ll never catch me.”Salem police called off the chase once it went into its city about 7 p.m. due to heavy traffic and inclement weather.A State Police spokesman confirmed Tuesday that Ouimet was arrested in Lynn around 11:30 p.m. Friday by the State Police Fugitive Apprehension Unit and Lynn police. He was booked at the Lynn police station on charges of larceny of a vehicle, larceny from a person over 60-or-disabled, receiving stolen property and two default warrants.Peabody police attempted to stop Ouimet before the chase after realizing he was driving a stolen vehicle, according to police. However, published reports indicate Thursday’s incident was definitely not Ouimet’s first brush with the law. He was allegedly involved in another high-speed police chase in Saugus a day earlier. On Wednesday, a State Police Trooper identified in published reports as Jodi Gerardi attempted to stop Ouimet on Route 1 for driving a stolen silver 2008 Ford Mustang that was weaving through traffic. After Ouimet allegedly refused to stop, speeds reached 100 mph before he got off the highway at Route 129. Ouimet allegedly traveled into Goodwin Circle and drove across the grassy median moments before police called off the chase.According to authorities, Ouimet is being held on $20,000 cash bail after a Salem District Court arraignment on Monday. He’s accused of stealing an elderly man’s car in Ipswich and other cars in Lynn, Lowell and Gloucester. Ouimet’s driving record reportedly indicates he’s had 63 criminal and civil infractions since 2002.
