LYNN – Firefighters plucked a man from the second floor balcony of 365 Maple St. Thursday and stopped a fast-moving fire from destroying the three-story house.Peterson Bazile fled his home shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday but returned, his sister said, to retrieve a valuable item. Denny Driscoll lives across the street from the house and woke to screams.”I heard someone screaming, ‘There’s someone on the roof,'” she said.Driscoll and his father ran to the back of their home to grab a ladder. By the time they returned to the front of the house, firefighters had rescued Bazile.Fire investigator Donald Baron said the fire may have started in light switches next to a first-floor kitchen doorway. District Chief Thomas Swirka and crews from Engines 1, 3 and 10 and Ladders 1 and 4 stopped the fire from sweeping through the second and third floors.”It was a real close call but they stopped it just in time,” said District Chief William Curran.Ruth Bazile said her brother, James, heard a smoke detector ringing on the third floor and alerted other family members, including children. The Baziles have lived in the house for a year. Owner Lony Bazile Thursday said the family will rent an apartment while undertaking repairs.The fire was the third in the city since Monday when fire broke out at 4 a.m. in the basement of a group home at 30 Lewis St. Firefighters also put out a grease fire in 190 Franklin St. at 8:30 p.m. Monday.
