PEABODY – A 39-foot mobile camper was burned to a crisp Wednesday in a driveway at 3 Connors Road on the Danvers line, according to the Peabody fire department.Peabody and Danvers firefighters responded to the scene shortly after 2:30 p.m.According to Paul Lynch, a Peabody deputy chief, a man was working on the camper and walked away from it a few minutes before the flames erupted. By the time the man returned, the camper was fully involved in fire.He said Danvers firefighters had responded to a call nearby in their city when they saw thick black smoke and immediately responded as multiple calls were coming into Peabody’s 911 system. The camper’s body is made of fiber glass.”The black smoke that came off was like a bomb drop,” Lynch said. The deputy chief added that the heat melted some vinyl siding on the home and two elderly residents were evacuated. No injuries were reported. The cause is still under investigation.
