Marblehead fire chief candidate to be interviewed Wednesday

MARBLEHEAD – Fire Capt. Jason Gilliland will be interviewed by selectmen Wednesday for the position of fire chief.He was the only firefighter listed on the qualifying list Civil Service sent to the town. The list arrived at Town Administrator Tony Sasso’s office at Abbot Hall around 2 p.m. Thursday.Gilliland is one of five captains in the department and for the past year he has headed the School Department’s Security Subcommittee, overseeing security improvements in the town’s schools.At the prompting of current Fire Chief Barry Dixey, who plans to retire next year, selectmen called for a Civil Service list of candidates for the position of Fire Chief last month.The Civil Service exam for fire chief is offered in March.Four captains and as many as four lieutenants were eligible to take the exam.Dixey has served the town as a firefighter for a little less than 31 years. He has served as fire chief for the past nine years. In 2007, Dixey was the fourth highest-paid town employee, earning $104,895.
