MARBLEHEAD – Marblehead High seniors have 13 quotes that they could use to fill two empty spots and decorate the school entrance. The Class of 2009 plans to give the school two engraved plaques containing inspiring quotations to fill outside wall spaces briefly occupied by two controversial relief sculptures when the new high school opened six years ago.Vice President Wes York and Class Historian Jessica Robbins told the School Committee Thursday evening that after giving senior and sophomore English classes a chance to nominate quotes for that honor they have added four quotes to the field of nine that they already had.Class officers, assisted by Class Advisor Patricia Clough, Principal John Ziergiebel and the faculty, will whittle that list down to six and the school will vote to choose two on a special school-wide election. The quotations will be listed on the ballot in two groups of three, arranged by category. Possible categories include education, knowledge and maturity. The new quotes include the words of educators John Dewey and Allan David Bloom, philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson and inspirational writer William Arthur Ward. The previous list included Albert Einstein, Galileo Galilei, Confucius, Erasmus, William Butler Yeats, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Marian Wright Edelman and John F. Kennedy. The School Committee reviewed the new quotes and offered no objections.
