SAUGUS – Police are searching for a couple who stole a puppy from Debby’s Pet Land on Tuesday.Officers were dispatched to the Route 1 shop when an employee reported the theft at about 9 p.m.According to Detective Leonard Campanello, a white woman between 25 and 35 years old asked to hold the white, four-pound Bichon Frise in the play area of the store. The woman presented an employee with identification, but now police are investigating whether the ID was a fake.Employees left the woman and her male companion alone with the dog for a few minutes, but when they returned the couple and the dog were missing. The animal is worth about $1,000.”This is the first pet theft I’ve been aware of in a while,” Campanello said.An employee wrote down the license plate number of a possible getaway car, but police couldn’t track the number to any vehicle.Employees of the pet store said they could not comment on the case Thursday with permission from corporate bosses.
