SAUGUS – A 30-year-old Revere man was arrested Friday at the Square One Mall after eyewitnesses said he beat his 20-year-old girlfriend in the parking lot then got into a battle royale with police officers who tried to intervene, according to police.Anthony Fiore of 19 Tetford St. was arraigned Monday in Lynn District Court on several charges including domestic assault and battery, witness intimidation, resisting arrest and assault and battery on a police officer. His girlfriend later posted the $500 bail, according to court records.A shopper leaving the Route 1 mall told police in a written statement that she thought she saw two men fighting in the parking lot at about 8:55 p.m. It turned out it was Fiore in a physical assault with his girlfriend, placing his hands around her neck before picking her up by the shoulders and slamming her on the ground, police said. The eyewitness began screaming at Fiore, “Leave her alone!” allowing the victim to get into her car, police said.Fiore allegedly yelled to the witness, who was now calling 911 on her cell phone, “You’re only making things worse!”Saugus Police Officer Frank Morello was in an unmarked police car near Sears’ automotive center when he heard the yelling. Morello said in a police report he observed Fiore slam his girlfriend’s car door “with a great amount of force” then walk angrily toward the Sears building.Morello tried to speak with the girlfriend but she sped away, police said.Seconds later, Fiore allegedly made a “dead run” toward the female eyewitness, running straight at her while screaming a four-letter word, according to a police report. The officer immediately caught up with Fiore and identified himself as a police officer in order to prevent what he described as an imminent assault. Fiore allegedly walked in another direction when he saw the uniformed officer approach.A foot chase then occurred in the crowded parking lot when Fiore refused to speak with the officer, according to police.Morello grabbed the suspect by the back of his sweatshirt at the mall’s main entrance (at the former Ironside restaurant) but he struggled and tried to get away. That’s when Morello sprayed Fiore once with pepper spray, police said.Fiore allegedly continued to fight with the officer and the two began wrestling on the ground as a large crowd at a bus stop looked on.”They were all observing this commotion take place and were within range of [hearing] Fiore screaming obscenities,” the police report said.As back up officers arrived, Fiore was allegedly combative with them as well.Police said Fiore kicked his feet at the officers while being handcuffed, then tried to head-butt an officer, but missed, while being placed into a cruiser. Officers said they were forced to strike the suspect numerous times after he tried striking them.Fiore is due back in court Jan. 30 for a pre-trial hearing.
