The Bishop Fenwick boys basketball team made new head coach Mike Kane’s debut on the bench a successful one with an 81-70 win over Cardinal Spellman Tuesday at Brockton.Kane moved into the top job after former coach Sean Connolly took the head coaching job at St. John’s Prep.Fenwick’s Mike Clifford led everyone in the gym with 32 points. He was also a force on the boards, pulling down 17 rebounds and blocking three shots. Phil Eagan had 20 points for the Crusaders with 12 of them coming on 12-for-12 free-throw shooting. His 10-for-10 run in the second half put the game away for Fenwick, which also had a big lift from Nick DiPanfilo (18 points) and point guard Nick Cotoia (6 assists).English 83, Revere 56At English, Ryan Woumn (33 points) was hitting from here, there and everywhere for the Bulldogs, who are 2-0. English led 25-22 at the half with Woumn accounting for 21 of the points. Eugene Turner was a force in the paint, finishing with 19 points.”We played a better game than we did the other night (against Salem),” English coach Buzzy Barton said. “We picked up our defense, which is our bread and butter.”Tech 94, Whittier 28At Tech, the Tigers didn’t miss the hoop much in this one and the defense was about as tough as a defense can be, allowing Whittier only two second-half points.Tech led 50-36 at the half, but blew the game wide open by outscoring Whittier 28-0 in the third quarter and 16-2 in the fourth. Saugus led 26-16 late in the first quarter, but Gloucester made some defensive adjustments and, by the half, led 32-30. Saugus cut the lead to five points with about 1:50 remaining, but couldn’t get any closer.Salem 75, Peabody 48At Salem, Bryan Ortiz (20 points) and Antonio Reyes (16 points) did some damage for the Witches, who led 38-25 at the half. Sean Linehan had 12 rebounds to go with six points as Salem evened its record at 1-1. Ryan English (14 points) and Vasilios Frangias (11 points) led the Tanner attack, with Frangias also keeping Reyes, who scored 30 points against English, from inflicting too much pain.Lynnfield 66, Ipswich 29At Lynnfield, the Pioneers are off to a 2-0 start after defeating Ipswich, a team they hadn’t beaten in five or six years. Dan Kearny led the pack with 26 points, including four threes, and freshman Fred Shove checked in with 13 points and six rebounds. John Mehr had nine points and nine rebounds and Matt Connolly had six points and 14 assists.Marblehead 52, Danvers 27At Marblehead, Matt Temme (14 points) and Taariq Allen (11 points) led the Magician offense, with senior Tom Powers (10 rebounds) supplying some muscle under the boards.
