SAUGUS – Oaklandvale School second-graders delivered nearly 250 letters to Santa Thursday and were back in school before lunch.Approximately 38 students walked to Macy’s at the Square One Mall for the express purpose of mailing letters to Santa. Principal Kathleen Stanton said initially it was a second-grade project to write letters and mail them at Macy’s. The giant retail store was the target destination because Macy’s has promised to donate $1 to the Make A Wish Foundation for every letter to Santa mailed at the store.Stanton said when she learned what the kids were up to, she asked the other grades to join in as well.”I thought we should all be doing this,” she said.Stanton said after teachers took the time to explain to the students that each letter would net Make A Wish $1,it was easy to get the students to sign on and, in some cases, sign a letter.”Even the kindergarteners did it because we had letters they could just fill in,” she said.Stanton said the kids caused quite a scene at the mall, but it was a cute scene.”It was excellent,” she said. “They paged the manager and some of the muckety-mucks came out and some people stopped to see what the kids were doing – it was really great. It was really cute.”
