Hockey Roundup: Eagles get first win on emotional day in Wilmington

The St. John’s Prep hockey team finally got in the win column on Saturday, beating previously unbeaten Woburn, 6-1, at Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington on a day when the program honored 1999 graduate Derek Hines.Hines, a 2003 graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point, was killed in action while on patrol with his Army Ranger unit in Afghanistan on Sept. 1, 2005. Hines was a four-year varsity starter for the Prep hockey team and was a co-captain of the Army hockey team in his senior year.”It definitely was an emotional day,” Prep coach Kristian Hanson said. “Not only for our kids, but the Hines family. And it was a game that we had to win with the start we’ve had. We had to have these two points.”Five different players scored goals for the Prep, which moved to 1-3-1. Colin Blackwell had two goals with Derek Palm, Jon Farrow, Jon Sokolski and Sean Callahan also having goals. Palm and Callahan’s goals marked their first varsity tallies.”We had a good week of practice and I felt we’d come out and have a good game,” Hanson said.Sokolski added a pair of assists, along with Justin DiRienzo and Nick Riccio.Springfield Cath. 3, St. Mary’s 1At Springfield, the Spartans (5-3) had a 1-0 lead after the first thanks to a Jon Baldwin goal, but the hosts rallied to tie the game late in the second and then scored two in the third to win.”We played maybe our best game of the season,” St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee said. “We held the edge in play and played good enough to win.”Goaltender Donald Hesse was outstanding for the Spartans, turning aside 21 shots. St. Mary’s hits the road again on Wednesday, traveling to the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg for a game against St. Bernard’s.Revere 4, Peabody 2At Cronin Rink in Revere, the Patriots (4-1-2, 3-1-0 Northeastern Conference North) got a pair of goals from Chris Mastropietro and single markers from Nick Adreani and Peter Marino in the win.Sean Dean, Nick DiMare, George Winer and Jay Sasso each had assists for Revere. The Patriots led 1-0 after one on Marino’s goal and 2-0 in the second on the first of Mastropietro’s two goals.Peabody (3-2-0, 3-2-0) cut the lead to one in the second when Andrew Bucci scored at 10:54, assisted by A.J. Parker. But the Patriots responded by scoring twice in the first six minutes of the third. Adreani upped the lead to 3-1 at 2:12 before Mastropietro put the game away at 5:57. Matt Rodgers scored for Peabody with eight seconds left to close the scoring.Fenwick 5, Trinity Cath. 0At McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody, the Crusaders (3-1-2, 1-0-0 Catholic Central League/Small) received goals from all three lines and 17 saves from Craig Forrest in defeating the defending league champions.Bret Kidik had a goal and two assists to lead the Fenwick offense, which also got a goal and an assist each from Ryan Adamson, Mike Cipriani and Mark Sparaco. Adam Clay and Louis Williams each had a goal with Dale Crispin dishing out two assists.”It was nice to see a little balance,” Fenwick coach Bo Tierney said.Winthrop 5, Beverly 1At Larsen Rink in Winthrop, George Costa recorded a natural hat trick in the second period as the NEC North leaders moved to 6-0-0 and 5-0 in league play.Jack Liacos gave Beverly a 1-0 lead after the first before Costa went on his scoring spree in the second period. Ricky Boudrow and Joe Casey added goals in the third period.Gloucester 3, Danvers 0At Talbot Rink in Gloucester, the Fishermen (1-5-1) finally got into the win column as Josh Salah scored twice and Connor Cranston added the third goal to beat the rival Falcons.GIRLS HOCKEYSt. Mary’s 4, Arl Cath. 2At Connery Rink in Lynn, the Spartans (4-0-0) got two goals from Courtney Winters and a goal and an assist from Marisa Maccario to thwart their CCL rivals.”We knew that it would be a battle,” St. Mary’s coach Frank Pagliuca said.Kelsey Magrane made 13 saves in goal for St. Mary’s, which hosts Notre Dame (Hingham) on Tuesday.English 11, Peabody 0At McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody, the Bulldogs (5-0-0, 1-0-0
