Only seconds after the St. Mary’s boys hockey team let up a game-tying goal, sophomore Eric Rosengren made an impressive individual play to go five-hole on the St. Bernard’s goaltender with just over two minutes remaining in the game, lifting the Spartans to a 4-3 win.”It was a back-and-forth game,” St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee said. “Every time that they would score, we would stay positive. To score with two minutes left in the game in a battle for one of the top spots in the conference is an excellent thing.”St. Mary’s never trailed in the game. Donald Hesse had a strong game in net, turning away 24 shots.”Hesse was the backbone of the team tonight,” said Lee.Matt Malloy, Jon Baldwin and Andrew Bates were St. Mary’s other goal-scorers. Bates added an assist. Tom Braswell had a pair of assists.Derek Vecchia, George Carey and Baldwin continued their strong play.”They’ve been doing a great job with such a young team,” said Lee.The Spartans improved to 6-3.Lynn 4, Beverly 1At Rockett Arena in Salem, the Jets (4-3) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first period and never looked back. Jordan Morelli and John Finnegan scored the first-period goals. Jeff Porter then scored a pair of goals to put the game away.”It was a good, tough road win for us,” Lynn coach Joe Conlon said. “It is nice to see some of the hard work pay off.”Nick Comeau turned away 24 shots for the Jets.Ty Albano scored the lone Panther goal.Swampscott 3, Revere 3At Cronin Rink, the Big Blue scored a pair of goals in the third period to force the tie. Justin Massey and John Pelletier scored a goal and an assist for Swampscott. Gino Cresta picked up the other Big Blue goal.Jay Sasso scored a pair of goals for the Patriots. Chris Mastropietro scored a goal and an assist.Marblehead 5, Danvers 2At Salem State College, Ryan Dempsey had the hot hand for Marblehead (5-2-1), scoring two goals and assisting on one. He’s now scored five goals in the last three games.The game was scoreless after the first period, but both teams started to find the net in the second. Danvers’ Chris Kontos scored 5:30 into the period to give the Falcons their only lead. Marblehead’s Austin Coen tied things up less than a minute later and Dempsey netted his first goal two minutes later to put the Headers on top, 2-1. Kontos scored about three minutes later to tie things up.It was all Marblehead in the third period, with Dempsey, Alex Whitmore (goal, 2 assists) and Chris Donahue all scoring. Marblehead outshot the Falcons, 35-15. Tony Cuzner was between the pipes for the first two periods for the Headers with Aaron Reny taking over in the third.In other hockey action, Salem and Gloucester played to a 1-1 tie with Peter Cavallaro scoring for the Witches, and St. John’s Prep and BC High tied, 2-2. The Bishop Fenwick at St. Clement’s game was postponed due to pipe problems at the Porazzo Rink in East Boston. No makeup was available. Pentucket at Lynnfield was postponed until Jan. 21 at 8:15 p.m.GIRLS HOCKEYWilmington 3, English 1At Connery Rink, the Bulldogs were undefeated heading into the game, but Wilmington’s Kelly Brandano rained on their parade, scoring all three goals for the Wildcats.”Wilmington came out and took it to us,” English coach Anthony Martucci said.Wilmington took a 1-0 lead in the first period, only to see English’s Taylor Brown tie the game early in the second. Brandano notched the game-winner late in the period and then added a little insurance with a goal in the third period.Lynn goalie Katie Burt had a busy night, stopping 35 shots. The Bulldogs had plenty of scoring chances of their own, but Wilmington goalie Amelia Woodbury turned away 35 shots. Lynn is 5-1 with Marblehead on tap for Friday at Connery Rink (5).Beverly 8, Peabody 0At Peabody, Corey Konaxis, Katelyn Desimone and Corinne Woods led the scoring attack with a goal and an assist apiece for the Panthers (4-1). Brianna Jackson and Jenna LoVasco split time in net for the shutout.
