SAUGUS – A road rage incident on Route 1 escalated Wednesday when the two drivers and at least one passenger got out of their cars to fight and one man was stabbed several times, State Police said.Gilberto Perez, 41, of Roxbury, was arrested and charged with armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.According to Sgt. Timothy Finn, a State Police spokesman, the stabbing occurred in the breakdown lane of Route 1 northbound at Main Street shortly before 1 p.m.The stabbing victim left the scene in his own vehicle and drove himself to Lahey North Clinic in Peabody.Later, the victim was taken by ambulance to Lahey South Clinic in Burlington due to the seriousness of his injuries, Finn said.Perez was identified as a passenger inside a 2005 Nissan Morano.The driver was not arrested and it was unclear if he would face charges.Police did not release the victim’s identity.Finn said he was unable to release further details on the incident when reached Wednesday night.Saugus police said Perez was being held overnight at the town’s police station on the assault charges and outstanding warrants.He’s expected for arraignment today in Lynn District Court.
