LYNN – An 18-year-old Lynn man, who was asked by police to take a different walking route because Chestnut Street was closed due to a massive building fire, was arrested Thursday when he returned to the scene and began taunting and shouting racial slurs at the officer, police said.Angel Perez, of 91 Chestnut St., allegedly told Officer James McIntyre, “This is my hood. I own it,” when he returned to the fire scene with friends at about 1:45 a.m.About an hour earlier, McIntyre had informed Perez that Chestnut Street was closed to both pedestrians and vehicles when he tried to walk down the street.Perez allegedly left the area but returned with a group of people and began screaming at the officer, who was sitting in his police car blocking traffic at the intersection of Chestnut and Lander streets.McIntyre said he couldn’t hear Perez at first because the heat fan was running. As the officer exited his car, he said one of the youths in the group told Perez to quiet down, but he allegedly got louder.”This (expletive) wouldn’t let me cross the street but now he is,” Perez allegedly said, according to a police report. The friend tried to calm Perez down again to no avail, police said. When the officer approached, Perez allegedly replied, “(Expletive), what’s your badge number?”Refusing to calm down, Perez began yelling, “What are you gonna do (expletive)? Just shoot me? This is my hood. I own it.”McIntyre said he called for assistance when he noticed several neighbors began looking out their windows to see what was going on.Perez, who was found to have a folding knife in his possession, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, violating the city’s knife ordinance, carrying a dangerous weapon while a warrant was in effect and two outstanding warrants for assault and marijuana charges.McIntyre noted in a police report that the streets had become icy due to the large amount of water used on the fire and that a fire ladder truck was fully extended and in use when Perez tried to walk down the street the original time.
