PEABODY – Work on the Peabody Bikeway project has been postponed until weather conditions improve, Assistant Director of Planning Blair Haney wrote in a memo to the City Council.According to his statement, construction was brought to a halt during the second week of December and won’t resume until mid-March, depending on the weather.”Assuming winter conditions do not present unanticipated delays in starting back up again in the spring, the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of the calendar year,” wrote Haney.Construction first began just under a year ago and has continued rather consistently since. Trees have been cut down, pathways cleared, and the first layer of asphalt successfully applied. All that remains for the 4.6 mile trail is grading the path side slopes and loaming, seeding and landscaping the area for stabilization purposes. Fence and guardrail installation will take place simultaneously. The final phase of pavement will be completed next, followed by last minute touches such as minor traffic signal work on Lowell and Prospect Street, barriers, bicycle racks and signage.
