PEABODY – Evidence from Tuesday night’s accident on Route 1 South in Peabody has led State Police to believe that the injured person was actually ejected from the vehicle and not a pedestrian after all, said State Police Spokesperson Dave Procopio.Michael Urany, 34, of Nahant, was arrested and arraigned in Peabody District Court Wednesday on charges of operating under the influence of liquor, operating under the influence of liquor causing serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury, negligent operation, use of a motor vehicle without authority, marked lane violation, speeding and a seatbelt violation. He pleaded innocent and bail was posted at $2,000. The judge also ordered him not to drive.Urany is believe to be responsible for the accident that sent Marblehead resident Matthew W. Bisegna, 30, to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries. Urany’s 2001 brown Chevy Malibu struck a 1998 Ford Taurus driven by a Dover, New Hampshire man and likely spun out. The driver of the Taurus sustained no injuries, but Bisegna remained hospitalized Wednesday.”It is still under investigation whether the Malibu lost control and struck the vehicle, or struck the vehicle and then lost control,” said Procopio.State Police received a call at approximately 6:50 p.m. Tuesday for a motor vehicle accident near the area of Spinelli’s. As a trooper was responding to the scene, State Police received another call from a motorist who was following the driver who fled the scene. Police later found the car, a 2001 brown Chevy Malibu traveling down Jenness Street in Lynn. Procopio said that vehicle showed obvious signs of a recent collision, with heavy front and rear damage, deployed airbags, and smoke coming from the engine.According to the police report, Urany stumbled out of the driver’s seat. Police observed his speech was slurred, his eyes were glassed over and he had difficulty standing. He told the trooper he was coming from Cabaret, the Route 1 gentleman’s club, and had “had a few drinks.” He failed several field sobriety tests and a Breathalyzer.Bisegna was found injured near the center of Route 1, along the median strip. His cellphone was later found inside the Malibu, causing police to believe he and Urany were friends and he was inside the vehicle during the crash.”He was either ejected or exited the vehicle on his own after the crash,” said Procopio. “But it’s still under investigation.”The Malibu belonged to Urany’s former girlfriend, who told police he did not have permission to drive the vehicle.Urany is scheduled to appear in Peabody District Court again on Feb. 13 for a pretrial hearing.
