Former Swampscott High football player Barry Gallup will be honored Wednesday, Feb. 11, as part of a fundraiser by the 33 Touchdown Club, a group comprised of former football players with the purpose of establishing scholarships for scholar-athletes.Gallup, who is currently the associate athletic director for football at Boston College, graduated from Swampscott High in 1964 and played for legendary coach Stan Bondelevitch. He was a record-setting wide receiver at BC, and later coached at the school and was its recruiter during the time when the football program began its ascent to its highest-ever national status – its victory in the 1984 Cotton Bowl over Houston. In addition to his association with BC, Gallup was also a coach and athletic director at Northeastern, where he helped bring that program back to respectability before returning to The Heights in 2000 to take over in his current position.Throughout his career, Gallup has mentored many athletes.”I have known Barry Gallup for close to 45 years,” said Alexander T. “Sandy” Tennant, a former player at both Swampscott and Harvard. “He was my mentor as a young high school athlete and is one of the most dedicated, hard-working people I have ever known.”He has helped literally thousands of young adults, both men and women, to become not only good athletes, but productive adults and contributing members of their communities.”The “Scholarship Huddle Fundraiser” will take place at the Seaport Hotel in Boston, from 6 to 8 p.m. Mike Lynch of Channel 5, Boston, another former Swampscott and Harvard football player, will serve as master of ceremonies. For more information, visit the organization’s website at www.leaguelineup.com/33; or email [email protected]; or phone Bob Horan at (508) 314-3865.
