SWAMPSCOTT – The town has its own version of “The Biggest Loser” with a twist. The town weight loss challenge is kinder and gentler than the television reality show – everyone is welcome, no one ever gets voted out and the three biggest losers receive prizes.Swampscott weight loss challenge coach Nancy Gilman said the Weight Loss Challenge was inspired by the popular reality show “The Biggest Loser.”Gilman said the 12-week Weight Loss Challenge offers a quick, easy weight loss solution and long term weight loss success. She said the participants do not have to belong to any specific weight loss program such as Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig or Herbalife.”The objective is for people to feel good about themselves, to achieve their weight loss goals and have fun,” she said. “The 12-week course gives people accountability. Together everyone wins. We use this format to educate the community about a better healthy, active lifestyle and to help fight the obesity epidemic in a fun environment.”Gilman said participants will get a free body analysis, learn how to shop, learn portion control, get tips on dining out and exercise. She said each participant also has their own personal wellness coach. She pointed out a similar challenge in Worcester had a total of 154.8 lbs lost and the first prize was $300 for someone who lost 36.8 lbs.Town Hall Administrative Assistant Maureen Shultz said the group has been very supportive.”We meet at Town Hall every Thursday to get weighed and talk and get measured,” she said. “It’s been fun so far.”There is a one-time fee of $29, which goes into the pot of cash and prizes to be shared by the three biggest losers in the group. Materials will be provided and prizes will be awarded throughout the program. The program is currently held at Swampscott Town Hall, 22 Monument Ave., every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Gilman said a new 12-week session would be starting up in February and prospective participants can register by calling 617-257-5159.
