Peabody councilor has visions of green

PEABODY – City Councilor Anne Manning hopes to get her city on board with “going green” through her Ad Hoc Committee on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.”Given the economy, we want to save money, but we also want to look for alternative energies,” she said. “I’m not by any stretch of the imagination knowledgeable in energy, but by simply staying apprised of what’s happening day to day, one can sense that this is the direction we need to go in.”The state’s latest Green Communities Act, which passed in July, has earmarked millions of dollars to help communities make conscious decisions with respect to renewable energy and energy conservation.”It’s the direction the country is moving in and the state, too,” said Manning. The first step for Peabody to get involved is to form a community-based committee made up of residents, public department heads, the mayor and many others. Anyone interested can join, said Manning, adding that so far, several people have already expressed interest in participating. The community group will be responsible for brainstorming ideas on energy use and conservation, as well as grant opportunities, to later present before the council. Members of the group will also work with surrounding communities to make better decisions as a region. So far, the city itself has taken steps in the green direction by adopting legislation that requires the city to purchase only fuel efficient vehicles whenever possible from now on.”Our goal is to save money for the city as a whole, but also to make conscientious decisions in which way we go in the future when it comes to natural resources,” said Manning. “We have a commitment to the environment that we have to adhere.”Those interested in joining Manning’s effort may contact her directly at 978-531-7539, or the Mayor’s Office at 978-538-5700.
