LYNN – The parents of a 5-month-old baby from Lynn were arraigned Tuesday in Lynn District Court on child abuse charges. The father, Reynaldo Santiago, 37 and the mother, Eunice Landrau, 25, both of 66 Newcastle St., were each summonsed to court for wantonly permitting substantial bodily injury to a child. The Department of Children and Families began investigating the parents after the child suffered burns to his back Oct. 30 then an unexplained broken arm Nov. 10.The boy was described in a police report as having “many broken bones” but his exact injuries were not disclosed.During an interview Nov. 10 at North Shore Children’s Medical Center in Salem, Santiago told police the burns were the result of an accident from when he cleaned feces off the child by holding him over a sink with running hot water, according to a police report. He said the child suffered bowel problems, adding that the water might have suddenly gotten hot due to a malfunctioning toilet in the same bathroom. The boy was treated at Shriner’s Burn Institute for his injuries in October. It’s unclear exactly how the boy got the broken arm in November, but police say he was alone with the father and the boy’s paternal grandmother when it happened. The grandmother was listed as a suspect in a police report but court documents don’t indicate if she was charged.Landrau told police she and Santiago recently broke up and had left the child in the care of Santiago, who was staying at his mother’s Hesper Street home, the night she believes her son broke his arm.DCF has since taken custody of the child. The parents are due back in court March 3 for a pre-trial hearing.
