Roundup: Winthrop boys hoop routs Tyngsboro

The Winthrop High boys basketball team made easy work of Tyngsboro Tuesday, winning 71-38 in Division 4 North first-round action at Winthrop.The Vikings led 34-18 at the half and 50-26 after three quarters. Forward Jake Connors came off the bench and scored 18 points in what coach Dave Brown called his best effort of the season. Dino Mallios was good for 15 points.Winthrop plays North Shore Tech Saturday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals.GIRLS BASKETBALLReading 49, Danvers 31In Division 2 North first-round play at Reading, the Falcons couldn’t get their game in gear against an explosive Reading team.”They (Reading) played hard. They played smart and they played physical,” Danvers coach Pat Veilleux said. “They exploited our weaknesses. They took us out of everything we wanted to do.”Erica Veilleux had 11 points, including three threes, for Danvers and Sarah Palazola had six points. The Falcons finish the season 19-9.In Division 1 North girls action, Beverly lost to Somerville, 66-48, and Salem lost to Cambridge.GIRLS HOCKEYMarblehead 2, Barnstable 0At Rockett Arena, Franny Pelletier scored for Marblehead in the first period and Kelsey Maguire added a little insurance in the third. Goalie Moe Bradley picked up the shutout with 21 saves. The Magicians peppered Barnstable goalie Morgan Dupuis with 40 shots. The Magicians (14-5-2) will play Arlington Thursday at Arlington (7) in the quarterfinals.
