MARBLEHEAD – A Lynn man was arrested for drunken driving Tuesday after leading police on a high-speed chase through Salem and Marblehead.Daniel Aylward, 48, of 12 Castle Rising Court #112, was arrested in Marblehead and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol (second offense), driving with a suspended license, driving to endanger, speeding and a marked lanes violation shortly after 11 p.m.Marblehead police officer Eric Osattin says he heard Salem police radio that a driver in a black Nissan Infinity nearly struck a Salem police car on Layfayette Street and was heading into Marblehead, according to a police report. Osattin positioned his car near the town line and says the car sped past him going nearly 65 mph.Osattin says he activated his lights and sirens and the car slowed down, but then sped up to 45 mph and took a wide right turn onto Maple Street where it eventually stopped. The driver, Aylward, allegedly told officers he had five drinks a short time earlier and had been drinking at Fantasy Island in Salem and China Lion in Lynn. A strong odor of alcohol was noticed on his breath, police said.Police say that out of the blue Aylward became extremely combative at the police station and pretended to pass out on the floor. Officers say they immediately contacted an ambulance because it appeared Aylward was unconscious, but then noticed he kept squinting his eyes open to see what was happening. He was brought to Salem Hospital, where he allegedly refused treatment, then flailed his arms and legs preventing officers from taking him back to the police station, police said.During the ambulance trip Aylward allegedly kicked and tried to remove handcuffs from his wrists.Aylward was arraigned late Wednesday afternoon in Lynn District Court where Judge Richard Mori ordered him held on $250 bail. Aylward faces similar charges from Salem police.
