STONEHAM – For the first time in over three decades, Revere’s hockey team will be venturing to the semi-finals of the Division 2 North state tournament. The Patriots picked up an emotional win over Lynnfield 3-2 in a shootout.”I knew that it was going to be some kind of a game,” Revere coach Jim Palumbo said. After already scoring both goals in regulation for the Patriots, Chris Mastropietro took the ice as Revere’s third participant in the shoot out. Neither team had been able to put the puck between the pipes. Both of the prior participants missed while trying to go five-hole on Lynnfield’s goaltender Craig Cataldo. Mastropietro faked as if he was going downstairs as well, but flipped it up to the top of the net.”We practice shootouts every single practice,” said Palumbo. “Obviously we’re not doing a very good job of it. They only scored one goal.”Both Cataldo and Revere’s goal tender Nick DiMare had phenomenal games. DiMare turned away 36 shots, while Cataldo was called upon make 32 saves.”The goaltending was excellent tonight,” Pioneers coach Vin Mirasolo said. “Both of them were just amazing.”Lynnfield’s first goal came in a questionable fashion as the second period came to an end. Mark Connolly scored on the power play, apparently just beating the buzzer. After another Mastropietro goal, Lynnfield found itself with less-than five minutes to tie the game. On a two-on-one, Mike Connolly scored after a nice pass by John Lee. Mark Connolly also picked up an assist on the play. Both teams brought a physical aspect to the game. George Winer made several big hits, but ended up getting hurt after delivering a hit to Dylan Costa. He skated off the ice at the 9:54 mark of the first period. He returned to a standing ovation on the second period’s opening face off.Revere picked up a little revenge after being dismissed by Lynnfield the past two seasons. The Patriots will do battle with Lincoln-Sudbury, which defeated Peabody, 4-1, on Monday night at the Chelmsford Forum in North Billerica.
