LYNN – Students from the Sacred Heart Church Choir will take the stage with members of the Notre Dame University Folk Choir Sunday in a joint concert at the Boston Street Church.About 20 members of the university’s 60-member folk choir will make the trip from South Bend, Ind. to Lynn this weekend to perform sacred songs from around the world with the church choir. The Notre Dame Folk Choir travels throughout the country performing songs from England, Africa and Ireland periodically, but will be making its first trip to Lynn thanks to former graduate assistant Jennifer Cimino, who now works as the church choir director.Cimino was a member of the folk choir when she was at Notre Dame, and when she took over at Sacred Heart, encouraged her friends and former colleagues to pay a visit to the church.”I used to be a graduate assistant there, so when I came here I called them and said ‘you have to come see our church,'” she said. “The choir travels a lot. When I was with them we went to Portland and Seattle and we spent some time in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.”Aside from traveling to various missions across the country, the folk choir will also be featured on NBC Easter Sunday, performing during Notre Dame’s Easter Mass at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The group has recently completed an album of Irish sacred music called “Songs of Saints and Scholars,” which is scheduled for release on St. Patrick’s Day.The concert will feature joint performances from the 20 Notre Dame students and 40 Sacred Heart choir members, as well as solo performances from each group. Cimino has been working with the students on the performance for weeks and says all of the members of her group are excited for the day.”It is all they can talk about,” she said.Sunday’s free concert begins at 4 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 571 Boston St.For more information on the Notre Dame Folk Choir visit www.nd.edu/~folk.
