The answer to this year’s question is Radford. The question – of course – is: Name one college you’ve never heard of that’s competing in this year’s NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball tournament. For the record, Radford is in Virginia, and it’ll be driving two states down this weekend to tangle with the North Carolina Tar Heels – the No. 3 overall seed in this year’s Big Dance.Radford won’t be staying long, but that’s not the point. For one day, the Highlanders (there’s another hint that we’re not talking about the big time. The only other team I know of called the Highlanders plays in Somerville) can eat at the table with the big dogs.I also have Radford in the 12-16 slot in the office pool, which is why – of course – any of this matters to me anyway. No early-round upsets coming out of THAT end, I guess.Be that as it may, the task is upon us to do some prognostications. This usually involves throwing everything up in the air and seeing where it lands, and this year’s no exception. It isn’t as if I go into this blind, but there’s a reason I’m not on ESPN at two in the morning parsing this stuff as if I’m Bill Clinton splitting hairs over the definition of “is.” I’m a fan, but I don’t start paying attention until February, when things start taking shape.I told my good friend Ralph Minsky back in December, however, that the champion was going to come out of the Big East. Ralphie bleeds Duke Blue, so of course he disagreed. But with three of the four top seeds coming from – you guessed it – the Big East, I guess you can say the odds are good that I will be proven right ? and Ralphie will be wrong.I’ve liked Pittsburgh all year. I don’t pay attention to conference championships, so it doesn’t matter much to me that the Panthers lost in theirs, or that they lost to Providence back in February, or that Syracuse is on a high after that ridiculous overtime win over Connecticut. When the bell rings, Pitt will be there, and I like the Panthers to see this through to the end. Now, let’s work backwards to get us there.BOSTON REGIONALWe might as well start here, since Pitt’s the top seed. I think this will be a rather easy ride for the Panthers until the regional final, where I see Villanova on the other end. This thing’s set up so that Villanova meets Duke next Thursday in Boston, and I would agree with that. And while Duke did win the ACC conference title, I’m not sure about the Devils against ‘Nova. I like the Wildcats in this game, and love the prospect of seeing an all-Big East regional final next Saturday.Pitt, of course, will be there next Thursday, too, but against whom? I say it’s Florida State, which will handle Xavier in the second round. Now, the entire world is telling me that Virginia Commonwealth will upset UCLA in the first round, so who am I to argue? VCU is the upset special here (though apparently not so special, judging by the pundits).MEMPHIS REGIONALNorth Carolina may not have been the No. 1 seed in this thing, but it definitely got the easiest draw – at least, until it gets to Memphis. The Tar Heels have two gimmies this weekend, and can get to the Sweet 16 without even showing up.Oklahoma may have earned the No. 2 seed here, but that doesn’t mean the Sooners are going to enjoy it for long. If Jim Boeheim’s known for anything, it’s for getting his teams to peak when they need to – which means No. 3 Syracuse destroys the Sooners to meet the Heels in the regional final. That’s where the Orange run out of gas (this time, hopefully, without a whole game’s worth of overtimes). Otherwise, things should go according to Hoyle here. No real upset specials, unless, MAYBE, Michigan dumps Clemson. Unlikely ? but possible. So, this side of the bracket is chalk. What about the other side? Strap yourselves in. That’s where we’re going to have some fun.INDIANAPOLIS REGIONALI wish Rick Pitino was coming to Boston. I’d imagine the greeting he’d get would be vociferous ? but only in terms of negativity. And we all know how he feels about Bos
