LYNN – Lynn Vocational and Technical Institute is one of 18 Massachusetts vocational high schools in the running for a new athletic scoreboard from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 103.IBEW has teamed up with non-profit Good Sports to offer a free, brand new athletic scoreboard to one vocational school this June, but the students of Lynn Tech will need the community’s help to increase their chances of winning. While the winning school is chosen through a random drawing, schools have a chance to increase their chances of winning by securing online votes from the community. For every 103 votes a school receives on IBEW’s Web site, www.scorewithlocal103.com, they will receive one entry into the final drawing. The more votes a school secures the more entries will be put into the drawing, increasing the chances for victory. The drawing, which has been widely promoted on local radio stations, will take place in June and the scoreboard will be installed over the summer. This is the first time that the electrician’s union has teamed up with Good Sports, a non-profit organization that distributes sports equipment to community-based athletic programs serving disadvantaged youth. The mission of the organization is to increase urban youth participation in sports and athletics by targeting one of the major factors that limits participation in low-income communities – a lack of sports equipment.”We are thrilled to have partnered with IBEW on this innovative grant program,” said Good Sports Chief Operating Officer Christy Pugh Keswick. “The community is lucky to have an organization like IBEW that has a dedicated philosophy of giving back to the region. We are thrilled to work with them to give kids the opportunity to engage in sports and fitness activities and all of their associated benefits.”Targeting the vocational schools where many members of their organization were groomed, IBEW officials say that helping out schools in these tough economic times is essential, and that includes supporting athletics that help students learn discipline, teamwork and cooperation.”IBEW Local 103 is proud to partner with Good Sports in this exciting contest to support our vocational schools and provide a valuable resource in such a tight fiscal time,” said IBEW Local 103 Business Manager Mike Monahan. “Our members are always looking to give back to the community and like our many other community efforts we look forward to working with our friends and neighbors to reward the most passionate vocational community among us.”To vote for Lynn Tech visit www.scorewithlocal103.com.
