SAUGUS – The Saugus High hockey team put the finishing touch on its season with a banquet Wednesday at the Hilltop Restaurant in Saugus.Coach Chris Connors recognized his six seniors including Matt Fraser, who took home MVP honors. Fraser led the team in scoring with nine goals and 18 assists and was a Northeastern Conference All Star.Captain Joe Vecchione, who was also a Northeastern Conference All Star, received the Coaches Award. Vecchione scored 13 goals and had 14 assists. The Unsung Hero Award went to captain Tyler Call and captain Derek Stretton received the Michael Maruzzi Award as the Outanding Defensive Player.Anthony Cucuzza took home the Saugus Itam Newo Nicolo Award and Tom Difraia received the Mary Burke Humanitarian Award.Steve Groark, a junior, was named captain-elect with Paul Andrews and Mike Kotowski earning the assistant captain jobs for next year.The Sachems are coming off a 9-11-2 season that saw them finish in second place in the Northeastern Conference South. They reached the Division 2 state tournament where they lost a heartbreaker to Wilmington, 1-0.
