Marblehead begins life without a Colantuno

March 31, 2009 by jerekson

The Marblehead High softball team will see what life without a Colantuno on the roster is like when the season begins next week.Between sisters Cailey and Courtney, there has been a Colantuno in the Magician lineup (and on the mound) for the last six years. The well has officially run dry now that younger sister Courtney is at Bowdoin (Cailey is a junior at Cornell). The changing of the guard means there’ll be a new face on the mound.Sophomore Sarah Hastings, who injured her knee last year and had to have surgery, will take over the job.”We have a young kid. She’ll give up some hits, but hopefully we’ll get runs for her and play some defense,” coach John Gold said.Hastings will have some experience behind her, although Gold has shifted players around to fill the holes left by Ashley White (third base), Laura Kanarski (Northeastern Conference All-Star at first base) and Mandy James, an NEC All-Star centerfielder. There will be some familiar faces, although they might be in different places.Kate Fallon was a shortstop last year, but she’ll likely be at third this year. Sam Norman will either be in centerfield or at shortstop. If she’s in centerfield, freshman Katherine DiGiammarino could find her way into the infield.”The team will center around Kate Fallon and Sam Norman,” Gold said.Senior Hannah Pelkey is back behind the plate and junior Silvie Cohen, who was in the outfield last year, will be at first base. Senior Grace Quigley was at second base last year, but she might be in the outfield. Also figuring into the mix are senior Lizzy Whitehill, who was a designated hitter last year, and her younger sister, freshman Laura Whitehill. The Magicians finished 12-9 last year, losing to Stoneham in their tournament opener. Gold is back for his fourth year.
