LYNN – In the fight against cancer, every dollar helps and the Boston Red Sox Rally Against Cancer charity has a few more dollars to work with thanks to the students, faculty and parents at the Hood Elementary School in Lynn. With the help of teacher Donna Whalen and run by the student council, more than 400 students and faculty at the school raised over $527 for the Red Sox Rally Against Cancer this month by donating $1 for the right to have their names printed on a paper baseball. Students also purchased raffle tickets for a chance to win a stuffed Red Sox bear, won by student Nicole Carredano.”Being an avid Red Sox fan, I have seen the Rally Against Cancer ads on the Red Sox Nation Web site,” said Whalen. “I thought it would be a good thing for us to do. We try and do a lot of community service with the kids to show them that it is about more than just them.”The donation to the cancer cause follows a Christmas season donation to the troops in Iraq and Whalen says more efforts are in the works.”The sheer number of donations we got says a lot for our kids and staff to raise this much money,” she said. “We are very happy with the donation because, sad to say, who hasn’t had their life affected by cancer in some way?”
