REVERE – Residents of Payson Street were shocked to learn a man was shot in the ankle shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday.”Are you kidding me!?” one woman exclaimed after hearing the news from Lisa Bennett, who lives across the street.”I just can’t believe this,” said Bennett, who said she has a hard time remembering the last time something like this occurred near her home. “Not since the [Daniel] Talbot case.”A police lieutenant confirmed that a man in his early 20s was shot once in the ankle and transported to Mass. General Hospital shortly after 7 p.m. with non life-threatening injuries. Neighbors say he was shot in front of 19 Payson, which is close to Beach Street.Police say the suspect is a white male about 18 years old who was last seen running through backyards toward Revere High School with a revolver in his waistband. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and baggy blue jeans.City Councilor At Large John Correggio was driving on Beach Street and said he heard about four gunshots.”I happened to be going to the Elks Club,” said Correggio, a former firefighter who keeps a police radio in his truck. “I heard loud shots. Pow, pow, pow.”Several neighbors say they’re concerned about violence after hearing reports of gunshots in the same area at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. According to a police log, officers responded to reports of gunshots near 38 Mountain Ave. at that time but found nothing.”This is overwhelming to have shootings in the past day in this general area,” Correggio said. “It’s generally a very quiet neighborhood. Everyone watches out for everyone.”Police said no suspects were arrested as of press time.
