April 7, 2009 by dobrien

REVERE – A man posing as a city employee knocked on the door of an Oakwood Avenue home Saturday afternoon and told the resident he needed to check a gas meter. But as the two residents and the alleged employee searched for the meter in the basement, the upstairs rooms were burglarized, police said.Police say the supposed employee was not a worker at all – but one of two thieves who conspired to steal from the residents. About $1,500 cash and an undisclosed amount of jewelry were taken from a master bedroom.Investigators believe that when the first suspect knocked on the victim’s door, the second suspect stood on the street watching the first man go inside. The victims told police the suspect who was allowed inside made an unusual amount of noise and a cell phone call while they stood in the basement, according to a police report. The victim was identified in the police log as John Pepi of 195 Oakwood Ave. but his age was not disclosed. The suspect allowed inside was described as a white man, about 50 years old, with dark hair and wearing tan pants and a dark-colored jacket. The victims did not see the second suspect. No arrests have been made.
