April 9, 2009 by itemlive_news

It looked like Peabody was on its way to a second heartbreaking loss in as many days, having seen a 5-0 lead against Beverly disappear at Cooney Field in Beverly on Wednesday, but the Tanners dug deep and summoned up a final-inning rally.Peabody struck for a pair of runs off Beverly reliever Kyle Johnson in the seventh and then hung on to take a 7-5 win in the Northeastern Conference opener for both teams.”There is no easy game in this league,” Peabody coach Mark Bettencourt said. “When we were up 5-0, I kept looking at my coaches and wondering when the rally was going to come ? We managed to weather the storm.”The Tanners (2-1, 1-0) broke on top in the second, getting four runs off Beverly starter Ethan Trout as Brad Piza had a two-run double and Marc Finocchio added an RBI single. Pete Sucharewicz added a solo homer in the third as Peabody looked to be cruising, up 5-0.The Panthers (1-1, 0-1) would fight back against Peabody starter Jared Shields as Trout had an RBI double and Peter Kallas added a 2-run homer to cut the gap to 5-3. Reliever Brian LaTorella took over in the fifth and watched as Mark Theriault tied the game at 5-5 with a 2-run single.Peabody settled down and was able to use two scoreless innings down the stretch from LaTorella to hold the fort and eventually win.St. Mary’s 11, Williams 5At Fraser Field in Lynn, Anthony Disciscio went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored as the Spartans fought back from an early 2-0 hole to best the Bishops.Alex Fiste also had a solid day at the dish, going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Ryan Beliveau picked up the win, going five innings with 10 strikeouts, three walks and no earned runs.”Ryan got key strikeouts when he needed them,” St. Mary’s coach Derek Dana said.St. Mary’s is 2-0, 2-0 CCL.Lynnfield 10, Saugus 7At World Series Park, the Pioneers (2-1) took an early 3-0 lead, but Saugus came back to go up 4-3 in the third inning. Lynnfield got the lead back in the fifth inning and by the seventh inning, the Pioneers were up 10-4. Saugus’ Tyler Calla made things interesting with a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to dig the Sachems out of the hole.Dante Padovani went the distance for Lynnfield. He scattered eight hits, struck out three and walked two. The Pioneers spread the offense around, with shortstop Matt Connolly driving in a run in the first inning. Mike Lang and Garrett McNeill each drove in a run in the third inning and in the fifth, catcher Nick Roberts jumpstarted a big inning with a lead-off double. Lang ended up driving in a run that inning with sophomore third baseman Chris Klotzbier singling in two. Sam Oliveri (2-run single) and Chris Grassi (2-run double) did the bulk of the damage in Lynnfield’s four-run seventh inning.Everett 4, Marblehead 1At Seaside Park in Marblehead, the game was tied at 1-1 in the sixth before the visitors broke the game open with a three-spot. Nick Haller, Brandon Lee and Dan Comeau each had a hit for the Magicians, who fell to 1-1.St. John’s 6, Gloucester 0At Danvers, senior pitcher Chris Carmain was in mid-season form for the Eagles, allowing only two hits, striking out two and walking one. St. John’s left the bases loaded in the first two innings, but made up for it in the third with four runs. Left fielder Greg Donahue had an RBI double, centerfielder Garrett Folger had a two-run single and Carmain a bases-loaded walk that inning. Donahue singled in another run in the fourth and Carmain had an RBI double in the fifth for the final two runs.
