Lynn church at center of LEO acquisition talks with Episcopal Diocese of Mass.

LYNN – An East Lynn Episcopal church off Eastern Avenue could have a new future as a child care center under plans in the preliminary discussion phase between Lynn Economic Opportunity and the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts.LEO Director John Mogielnicki is not sure if the two weeks of talks will result in a deal between the agency and the diocese. He also said a deal to use St. Alban’s Church as a child care center, if one materializes, will not necessarily end worship services there.”We’re not trying to displace anybody,” Mogielnicki said Friday. But St. Alban’s congregation members are anxious for news about their future. Rev. Evan Mwangi said he “knows very little” about the discussions, but added: “I’m not happy about it.”Mogielnicki said LEO needs to expand child care services to meet an overwhelming local need. The agency serves 350 kids at centers downtown and in West Lynn as well as one in Lake Shore United Methodist Church where worship services are held.”We have two kids on the waiting list for every kid we serve,” Mogielnicki said.St. Alban’s is the name given to the former All Saints Episcopal Church on Waitt Avenue in 1975 when All Saints and Church of the Incarnation merged and combined 300 congregation members.A Diocesan representative who declined to be identified called “discussions preliminary at this point,” adding, “the situation is moving quickly.” She referred questions to The Rev. Canon Mally Lloyd.Mogielnicki said LEO is looking at other potential child care sites in East Lynn.
