LYNN – A Lynn District Court Judge Thursday reduced the bail of 19-year-old Bernardo Urena, one of two Lynn men charged with murder in connection with the April 10 stabbing death of 18-year-old Carmello Sandevol.Urena’s attorney, Raymond Buso, argued that his client’s cooperation with police both in the hours following the incident last Friday night and throughout the investigation suggests that Urena has nothing to hide, and pleaded with the judge to reduce the $100,000 cash bail set at his April 13 arraignment. The judge declined to grant Buso’s request of a $1,000 bail – the amount of money he said his family has been able to come up with since the murder – instead reducing the amount to $7,500 cash. The father of a 10-month-old girl, Sandevol was stabbed in the chest during a brawl outside of the Connery Ice Rink last Friday night. Police found Sandevol bleeding in the back of a friend’s car outside of 94 Franklin St. shortly after the incident.Police believe that Sandevol went to the rink to assist a friend who was involved in an altercation with several people and ended up with a fatal stab wound to the chest in the process. The massive brawl involved more than 20 people, making it difficult for police to pin any forensic evidence to Urena.Urena was arrested April 11, one day after the incident, and charged with murder and assault and battery with a deadly weapon. He pleaded innocent to both charges April 13.When pressed, Urena later gave up the name of a second suspect, 18-year-old Yeison Arias, who was also arrested and charged with murdering Sandevol.Arias reportedly admitted to police that he stabbed someone during the brawl and later led police to two separate Salem locations where he discarded the knife and his blood-stained clothing.Buso argued that the reports of Sandevol dying of a single stab wound to the chest and Arias’ admission to stabbing someone during the altercation should be enough to reduce the bail of his suspect and criticized prosecutors for not providing him with information gathered during interviews and Sandevol’s autopsy.Urena is due back in court for a probable cause hearing May 12.
